I didn't end up staying in there and got a drink too go, but the staff was really friendly and the kavas well priced!! I wish I had time to spend there, the inside was nice and the dogs were friendly. Will definitely stop by when I'm on vacation again.

I walked into the establishment on Friday night, while my husband was finding parking. I ordered two nitros. The server, known as Christian, asked where my boyfriend was. He proceeded to accuse him of not paying his tab a week ago. He reports that they attempted to look for him at his side job.As soon as he came in, Christian starts in at him that he didn’t pay his tab and because of this Reese had to pay. I asked him for proof from the POS, and he started to get aggressive by ways of hauling his body over the bar to retrieve and pull the two kavas out of our hands. During this interaction, he was threatening to kick us out and call the police. We have been coming to this Kava Bar for the last four months since we moved down the stree. We have spent our money here. Our bills consistently being rung up to 100+ dollars. We only order 2 to 3 rounds and occasionally will take a four pack home.We have been loyal customers. We would never knowingly walked out on a tab irresponsibly. Christian proceeded to get loud and aggressive, and I started to ask him if he could provide proof of purchase on the POS. There are many times that we have paid in CASH. Christian said he could not do that but he would call Reese, the gentleman who served us that night, and was held accountable for inventory that we were accused of not paying. The confusion lies in the fact that we paid cash that night. My husband handed Reese $120 of cash, and I don’t know if he forgot about it, or just accused him and went along with it once he realized.By then owner Tony, who has never met us, is on the phone and also immediately accuses us of purchasing drinks we don’t even know what they are. His attitude was never seeking to understand. He continued to accuse. I explained to Tony that this is highly unlikely, and I asked for proof from his POS, or Reese’s phone (an employee would usually take a picture of a missing ticket that wasn’t closed/that he was held responsible for.) Tony huffed and puffed saying Reese was with him for 6 years. Reese collects a paycheck. We are the ones paying over 100 dollars per tab multiple times per week. Tony tried to intimidate by telling he has proof/video footage. I asked him to share with me and he says he’s not able to do that. He sounded really annoyed when I asked for proof of purchase instead of attacking us that we never paid a bill. We would never knowingly walk out and do something of this nature to an establishment that we enjoy spending our free time in.We are not hurting for money. My husband tipped Christian $40, the first time he got snippy with him. He did this to maintain the peace. Christian came at him for him ordering from his girl who is behind the cash register. For some reason, unbeknown to me, Christian got offended and salty, appearing to have a personal difference with my husband. A couple times, he would walk out after ordering from Christian and report to me that this particular server has been unkind, snippy, and disrespectful, almost mean, when he would order. He felt uncomfortable, but he was only one person out of several we would have to deal with. it is almost like it became a racial targeting concern, as Christian is white and my husband is Indian. Every time Christian is present, he makes him feel uncomfortable to the point where we get our drinks and leave. Instead of Tony, attempting to understand why we would feel uncomfortable, he continues to accuse him. I choose to hang up the phone with Tony once I realized his poor business acumen. He kept asking me if paying a second time was him admitting that he didn’t pay. We paid to keep the peace so that we could continue to enjoy our night. However, we were still kicked out and told to come back with no plan in mind of when we can see the point of sale receipt, and the footage of this claim of him walking out without paying. I’d love to see the proof, because right now we took the higher road and paid for these accusations. Meanwhile, taking their word over them actually showing us this was true.

My boyfriend and I have been coming here for quite a while and we absolutely love it. We don’t drink alcohol so going to bars is not on our agenda these days. We love coming here for date nights, open mic night and even during the day to sip and work on our laptops. I’ve been to a few different kava bars around town and none of them can compete with Island Root. The owner is a stand up guy and his staff is pretty amazing. Johnnie is our favorite bartender. Feels a little like the show Cheers sometimes because he knows our names and hands us our drinks without saying a word. THAT is service 🤙 BULA!!!
